What is Permaculture?

The founder of Permaculture defined it as a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted & thoughtful observation rather than protracted & thoughtless labour; of looking at plants & animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single-product system. We focus on the ecological and social functions of permaculture to grow healthy food and a healthy community.

Our Market Gardens & Micro Farm

Let the food be more than just your medicine. We at Wren and Lyre believe that truly healthy food can only be grown in ways that build healthy soil, reduce or eliminate fossil fuel inputs, keep our water clean, and provide habitat for diverse wildlife. Our gardens are modeled after mid-nineteenth century Parisian Market Gardens, and we manage them with permaculture methods such as passive rainwater harvesting, forest-edge gardening, polyculture, biochar, reduced or no tillage, and chicken-powered composting. Everything on the farm serves multiple purposes, and one of our primary goals is to maintain a closed-loop system to eliminate waste and reduce our dependence on non-local inputs. Our fresh produce is available through our community supported agriculture (CSA) program and at select farmers markets throughout York County. We also supply local restaurants and chefs who share our passion for quality and our commitment to our community. Contact us for more information.
